Wilson Kipketer gives Gibson Relays Technical Corner Lecture

World  800m record  holder, Wilson Kipketer was the guest lecturer at the annual Gibson Relays Technical Corner for 2010 the Kenyan born Danish athlete will move on to Havana, and on to Tobago where he will attend the NACAC Cross Country event. Kipketer  who is an Ambassador of the IAAF lectured at the G.C. Foster Sports College on Thursday, February 25.

Wilson is the holder of the 880m  record indoors and outdoors and the 1000m . A triple winner of the World Championships  800m, he won in Gotenberg, Sweden in 1995, Athens, Greece in 1997 and Seville Spain in 1999.  He has silver and bronze Olympic medals in the event in 2000, Sydney, Australia in 2000 and  Athens, Greece in 2004.

Winner of the  event indoors in 1997, he got two silvers, in 1999 and 2003.  He also won the European 800m in the European games in Munich and is generally regarded as the  best  half miler runner ever.

Born on December 12, 1972, he is now a Danish citizen. At the 1996 Olympics, he was not yet fully documented as a Dane and so was unable to compete for his adopted country.

His well presented lecture was supported by videos of his triumphs.  having goals and believing in yourself. He also noted that quality  training is much more effective than volume and quantity training, but the hard work must be done. In a heart to heart  address, he stressed the importance of believing in yourself, despite odds and obstacles.

He noted the stagnation in his achievements between  1990 and 1995, until he embraced his vision and goals and thereafter therewas no limit to what he could achieve.  Still lithe and  trim, he remains an icon in our sport and an inspiration to all whoms he meets.a representative   group was in attendance, comprised of administrators, coaches and athletes. Perhaps an emphasis on middle distance running  will evolve.
